“No, he didn’t.”

I rolled my eyes. “Nia, could you keep your voice down? I don’t want everyone in this bar knowing all of my business.”

She nodded and took a sip of her drink. We’d finally gotten together for an evening out and were catching each other up on our lives. She mentioned how the date went with the guy she met at Kiki’s party and how they were scheduled to go out again soon, and I’d just filled her in on how I made out with my boss.

“It’s clear that whatever Gage wants, he’ll stop at nothing to get. What if that means you?”

“Nia, he’s my boss.”

“He’s your temporary boss. And he’s an attractive man that wants to jump your bones. What’s so bad about that?”

“Oh, I don’t know. The fact that he’s my boss.”

This time, she rolled her eyes. “Did you kiss him back?”

“Uh—”

She put her hand up. “And that was all that I needed to know.”

“It’s such a bad idea. Having sex with someone you work with.”

“People do it all the time. You wouldn’t be the first nor the last.” She twisted the straw in her drink before she continued. “Look, I’m not pressuring you to do something you don’t want to do—”

I let out a dry laugh before I glanced around to make sure that no one was trying to listen to our conversation. “You mean just like you didn’t pressure me into going to Kiki’s party?”

“I didn’t pressure you into anything you didn’t want to do. I would have taken no for an answer if you weren’t curious about what might happen that night.”

She had me there, just like she had me when she asked if I’d kissed him back.

“Look, Mel, if what you’re doing doesn’t go against any of the rules, why not explore and see what happens? If that’s what you want. If not, tell me to kick rocks.”

I didn’t tell her to do anything, because I was conflicted about what I wanted myself. Another swig of my beer was my answer instead.

“How did the rest of the week go?”

I shrugged. “It was quiet. Gage has a trip out of town soon and was starting to prepare for that. When he wasn’t doing that, he was out of the office for one reason or another. Sometimes his calendar was blocked off, but other times he was just gone. I didn’t ask any questions and sent him emails if anyone had any questions for him. It was nice to not have to be stressed about seeing him as much.”

“And you two still haven’t talked about either incident.”

“Nope.” I put the bottle up to my lips, letting the cool liquid flow down my throat. “I might just act like it never happened.”

Nia snorted. “You might act that way, but I’m betting he won’t once he gets back. It’s clear that he wants you and I would hazard a guess and say that you want him too, given your non-answer.”

“Can we talk about something else? Literally anything else?”

Nia chuckled and changed topics, which I was grateful for.
